Softball Battles Butler at Home

LIBERAL, Kan. – Seward softball hosted the Butler Grizzlies at French Family Field on Wednesday afternoon in a Jayhawk Conference doubleheader. The Saints fell 12-4 in game one and 5-0 in game two.

Seward is now 8-14 overall and 2-4 in league play. Butler moves to 4-8 overall and 2-2 in conference play.

Seward hosts Clarendon College in non-conference play on Friday afternoon, with the doubleheader kicking off at 1 p.m.

Game 1: Butler 12, Seward 4 (6 Inn.)

A seven-run first inning did Seward in as the Grizzlies jumped out to a big lead early.

Kaitlyn Gonzales (L, 1-2) was hit with the loss as she started and allowed seven runs in the first. Aaliyah Arredondo came on in relief and threw the final 5.0 innings, allowing five runs on eight hits, striking out three, and walking two.

Ellie Randall (W, 1-4) threw a complete game for Butler striking out seven and walking two.

Jewell Carleton and Jahlisa Klear led the Saints offensively as both were 2-3 and scored two runs. Carleton hit her first collegiate home run in the bottom of the sixth.

Game 2: Butler 5, Seward 0 (7 Inn.)

Game two was a battle for the first five innings. Both teams' pitchers stepped up in clutch situations to strand runners on base as the game was scoreless over the first five.

The Saints made four errors and allowed three hits in the top of the sixth as Butler broke through to plate five runs.

Liberty Sharman (L, 2-7) suffered the loss despite not allowing an earned run. She threw all 7.0 innings with a strikeout and four walks. Anistyn Marcotte (W, 2-1) earned the win for Butler, throwing all seven innings, allowing four hits while striking out nine and walking six.

Each team stranded 10 baserunners in the game. Seward had baserunners in five of the seven innings. Amithys Perez, Mya Van Der Mey, Klear and Carleton each recorded hits for Seward.
