  • Pair of Lady Saints, Six Seward Teams Earn NJCAA Academic Awards

    Seven Seward County student-athletes and six of the seven teams on campus were honored on Tuesday with the NJCAA’s annual academic awards release.

    It was another banner year in the classroom for Seward County student-athletes in 2013-2014 and 57 of those Saints and Lady Saints were rewarded on Tuesday as Athletics Director Galen McSpadden announced the Spring AD Honor Roll.

    After being a surprising omission from the 1st Team All-Jayhawk West team in early May, Seward County sophomore outfielder Andrea Sitter got a bit of a consolation on Monday as she was named to the NFCA All-West Region 2nd Team as announced by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.

    While watching Seward County lefthander Katelyn Craker dominate in the circle this season for the Lady Saints, most fans and opponents probably thought that the sophomore pitcher was just another gifted athlete succeeding at the college level. Few knew what the southpaw had really overcome earlier in her career, something that would seem nearly impossible to most.

  • Lady Saints Fall in Region VI Championship

    For the third time in four seasons, the Seward County Lady Saints season came to an end in the Region VI Championship game Sunday afternoon at Wilkins Stadium in Wichita as after falling to Butler earlier in the day 8-3 and then working their way back to the title game with a 5-2 win over Barton, Seward fell flat against the rival Grizzlies in the Championship game, falling 15-4 to end their season.

    Seward County ace Katelyn Craker used her left arm to keep rival Garden City at bey for 6 2/3 innings Saturday afternoon in the Region VI Tournament in Wichita’s Wilkins Stadium. Lady Saints centerfielder Andrea Sitter used her left arm to get the final out, gunning down the would be tying run at the plate to end the game and give the Lady Saints a 2-1 win over the Busters in the quarterfinal round.
  • Bombs Away For Seward in Regular Season Finales

    The Seward County Lady Saints wrapped up the 2014 regular season in style on Friday in Great Bend, pounding the homestanding Barton Cougars 18-2 and 16-7 in run rule fashion to close out their regular season with a 45-11 overall record.

    After a week in which they helped Seward County to a 3-1 record which included their 40th win of the year, a pair of Lady Saints have been honored by the conference Tuesday with Jayhawk West Player & Pitcher of the Week awards. Pokey Ewell has been named the Jayhawk West Player of the Week for the first time in her rookie season with the Lady Saints while sophomore lefty Katelyn Craker earns her third Pitcher of the Week honor.

    It went about just as well as it could go for two Seward County sophomore pitchers on Sophomore Day at Lady Saints Field on Friday. Playing in their final home games of their Seward County careers, hurlers Katelyn Craker and Brittany Hopkins stymied the Pratt Lady Beavers, each tossing shutouts in 8-0 and 7-0 wins for the Lady Saints.

    The Seward County Lady Saints certainly weren’t at their best Wednesday afternoon as they took on Garden City in their 2014 Jayhawk West home finale, but they were good enough for a split, dropping game one to the Lady Busters 8-5 before squeezing out a 4-3 win in game two to split the doubleheader.

    On a brilliant day for softball Saturday in Colby the Seward County Lady Saints used the longball in a pair of wins, beating Region IX foes McCook and Trinidad State by wide margins while falling to Western Nebraska in a 2-1 day in the Allen Wolfe Memorial Tournament.

    Just when you thought the Jekyll and Hyde Lady Saints were gone and past, they showed up again Tuesday afternoon in Clarendon. After hammering Clarendon 22-1 in game one of their non-conference doubleheader, Seward inexplicably lost the second game of the twinbill 8-6 to the 12-28 Bulldogs.

  • Lady Saints Shock #1 Butler

    Sometimes a split is more than just a split on the softball diamond. That was the case Wednesday afternoon in El Dorado, Kansas as the Seward County Lady Saints went on the road to race their arch rivals, the #1 ranked Butler Grizzlies. After taking an early 2-0 lead and looking good in the first game of the double header, Seward saw their lead quickly erased by the Grizzlies and watched as Butler scored 10 unanswered runs to win 10-2. However, in game two they came out firing and took another early 2-0 lead in the 1st and continued to add on until they took a 6-0 lead after 4. This time Seward would hold the lead and after adding an insurance run late, the Lady Saints pulled off the 7-1 win over the Grizzlies, snapping an 11 game losing streak to Butler and also earning their first win over a #1 ranked team in program history.

    The Seward County Lady Saints took an eight game winning streak into Lamar, Colorado Monday afternoon as they took on a Runnin’ Lopes team who entered the day having lost five straight. The Lady Saints streak looked in doubt in both games, but in both contests Seward found a way to pull out the victories; albeit in very different ways.

    After failing to play their best softball on last week’s Spring Break trip to Phoenix, Arizona, Seward County Head Coach Andrea Gustafson was worried about how her team would react as they jumped back into Jayhawk West Conference play on Tuesday afternoon at Lady Saints Field in Liberal. Her fears were realized early on in game one of the double header as Seward faced an early deficit against the 4-21 Lady Trojans before coming back and hanging on to win 6-5. In game two it was a different story though as the gals in green pounded out 19 hits and took advantage of 6 Colby errors as they run ruled the hapless Lady Trojans 16-0 in just five innings to sweep the double header.

    After a successful Spring Break trip to Phoenix, Arizona a pair of Lady Saints were honored by the Jayhawk Conference Tuesday as 1st Baseman Becky Allen was named the Jayhawk West Co-Player of the Week while freshman Jaclyn Wagner was named the Jayhawk West Pitcher of the Week.

    Coming off of their first three game losing streak of the season, the #9 Seward County Lady Saints closed their annual Spring Break trip to Phoenix, Arizona with a good feeling, picking up a pair of wins Thursday afternoon against Mesa to improve to 24-7 overall on the year.

    On paper a sweep was likely Wednesday afternoon in Glendale, Arizona as the 9th ranked team in NJCAA Division I, the Seward County Lady Saints, took on a sub .500 NJCAA Division II team in the Glendale Gauchos. The paper was right, but the result was shocking as the Gauchos shutout Seward in game one of their double header 6-0 and stormed back from down 6-0 in game two to beat the Lady Saints 9-6 to sweep the double dip with the gals in green.
  • Lady Saints Set Offensive Records, Then Shutout in Odd DH Split

    The #11 Seward County Lady Saints put together a double header Monday that would leave many including Head Coach Andrea Gustafson scratching her head when the day was complete. In game one of their split double header against Lake Region State and South Mountain, Seward scored an all-time school record 29 runs, including an all-time record 20 runs in the 3rd inning of a 29-0 win over the Royals. In their second game of the double header it was a much different result as they were shutout 2-0 and had just 2 hits in a loss to the host South Mountain Cougars.

    Following a huge week on the diamond for the 11th ranked Seward County Lady Saints, third baseman Danielle Orr has been named the Jayhawk West Player of the Week as announced by the league on Tuesday.
  • Bats Power #11 Seward Past Barton

    Going into Friday’s double header with visiting Barton, it was the Lady Cougars offensive numbers that were at the top of the Jayhawk West charts, not the Lady Saints. However, Seward changed that trend in the twinbill, hammering out 16 hits in a 10-4 win in the first game and pounding out 10 more in game two to sweep the double header with an 8-3 victory.
