Lady Saints Fall at Barton

GREAT BEND, Kan. – The Seward County women fell 66-58 at Barton Community College on Wednesday evening.

Seward (18-10, 13-9 KJCCC) dropped its second consecutive road game with the loss to the Cougars (14-15, 12-11).

The Lady Saints took a 28-21 lead into halftime and did not trail in the third quarter. Barton took its first lead of the second half with 3:25 remaining and did not trail again, outscoring Seward 12-5 the rest of the way. The Cougars outscored the Lady Saints 45-30 in the second half, shooting 14 of 24 (58.3%) from the field and 15 of 18 from the free-throw line after going 10 of 32 (31.3%) and 6 of 6, respectively, in the first half.

Avery Marchino led Seward with 25 points and added a team-high seven rebounds as the only Lady Saint in double figures. Destiny Alexander finished with nine points and six rebounds, Trinitee Holmes had eight points and four rebounds, and Kimora Fagan totaled eight points, three rebounds and three assists.

Barton was led by Regina Donanu with 22 points and six assists, while Mary Akinde (17 points, 10 rebounds) and Mersadie Spray (13 points) combined for 30 points off the bench.

Seward shot 33.9% (20 of 59) from the floor and 4 of 14 (28.6%) from 3-point range while getting just six points from its bench.

The first quarter was tight throughout and ended in a 10-10 tie. Seward outscored Barton 18-11 in the second to take a 28-21 lead into the break. A pair of Marchino free throws late in the quarter gave the Lady Saints their largest lead at nine points, 26-17.

Seward returns to action Saturday at 2 p.m. against Cowley for Sophomore Day and homecoming.
